Tropical Coast Veteran Golfers Opens

Cardwell Veteran's Open

Despite damage caused by Cyclone Yasi and the floods in February as well as the ongoing adverse weather conditions which prevailed until May the Tropical Coast Veterans Open was conducted at the Cardwell Golf Course on Tuesday & Wednesday 12th & 13th July. The changes in the course were evident to the visiting players who have played in the Open in previous years with many remarking on the number of trees that had been destroyed and having to be removed in the aftermath of Yasi. Also evident was just how much effort had been made by the local organising committee and players with the cleanup at the course. One of the NQ players gave visitors an idea of the improvement to the course conditions since the Tropical Coast Veterans fixture day on 7th June .

In contrast the conditions were ideal on Tuesday 12th  July when an 18 Hole Stableford event attracted a field of 54 players.

Ingham Veteran's Golf Open

Veteran golfers from the local area and other districts in North Queensland were joined by visiting golfers from Victoria, NSW and southern areas of Queensland as well as a competitor from Darwin for the 9th Annual Ingham Veterans Open Championships conducted by Ingham Veterans Golf from Monday 18th to Wednesday 20th July .

In all a total of 90 players representing 35 clubs were welcomed to the new Ingham Golf Clubhouse by Ingham Veterans Golf President Fred Smith.

Play got under way on Monday 18th July when thirty-two pairs contested the Mixed 4BBB Stableford event on the opening day of OPEN 2011. Players played the inside 9 holes twice as the back nine holes is not yet playable after Cyclone Yasi but found the fairways and greens were in great condition which was a tribute to the work put in by the Greens keeper and voluntary labour from Ingham Golf Club members. Good scores were recorded by most of the field.

Maryborough Veteran's Two Day Carnival

More than 200 Veteran golfers from Queensland regions and as far afield as Camden Haven NSW returned to Maryborough on 11/12 July 2011 for the Open. It was great to see so many familiar faces back for the competition, the fellowship, the food and the good cheer at the nineteenth.
The early morning starters found conditions somewhat crisp with temperatures around 5 deg C on both days; but that aside the weather was flawless & without rain for the duration of the Carnival.

It was probably local knowledge and familiarity with the greens that saw Maryborough men winners in all grades. However the Ladies' competition was a completely different story with visitors as winners & runners up in both divisions.

Highlight of the Carnival was undoubtedly on Monday when popular Gympie associate Kerry Gallagher had a one at the 9th. It was Kerry's first ace and earned her the $600 Pro Shop voucher on offer for the first hole-in-one for the Tournament. We look forward to offering the same generous prize again next year

Maryborough's new Course Superintendent, Rod Newton, presented an immaculate lay - out with true greens and the majority of the bunkers rebuilt following flood damage earlier in the year. Good weather for the next few weeks will see the course in outstanding condition for the QVGU State Championships scheduled for 4, 5 & 6 September

Coral Cove Veteran's Spring Carnival

The Coral Cove Veteran Spring Carnival was again a success as John McAntyre reports

"After a lot of frustration and apparently unnecessary worry, plus of course a lot of hard work by many of the Coral Cove Veterans Golf Club committee and pro-shop staff, we ended up with a field of 85. That I feel is a magnificent result.

The Coral Cove Spring Carnival as the event has been named is now in its sixth year and has been sponsored over all this time by Mr Terry Tempest and his Company Advantage Screens and Blinds.

Among the 85 participants were visitors from:

Uralla                 Oakwood           Bundaberg          Bargara

Hervey bay         Tin Can Bay       Gympie              Isis

Our thanks to all visitors for coming with particular reference to the player who came all the way from Uralla and to the large groups from Gympie and Hervey Bay. The weather was kind, our Superintendent Tod provided a very well presented course, and our new caterers who only recently acquired the restaurant and bar lease and were caught a little by surprise by the numbers produced near miracles to keep the food and beverages flowing.

We certainly trust that everybody enjoyed themselves and look forward to seeing you all and many others again next year.

So next year even better again.

Bargara Veterans Two Day Classic

Once again the Bargara Veterans had a very successful Classis as Don McKewen reports.

"A very successful two day event was held with great support from 17 clubs from as far north as Rowes Bay south to Ipswich and great support from within the region—Hervey Bay, Wondai, Maryborough, Sunshine Coast and Yeppoon.
The course was presented in great condition despite recent wet weather.
Four divisions for men and three divisions for ladies were contested over the two days. 185 players on the Monday and 196 players on the Tuesday with all events and presentation finalised by 5.30pm.
Thanks to all clubs for their continued support of Bargara, many of which have been returning here for a considerable period".

Congratulations to the following major winners;

Terry Bulger       Yeppoon              Best Gross 36 holes    153

William Bennett   Maryborough       Best Nett 36 holes      138

Karen Brock      Bargara                 Div 1 Stab Winner      75
